The TORRES Truth Report
JULY / AUGUST 2009
We are excited about what the Lord has been doing in our lives as we live by faith, seeking prayer and financial support to go to where God has placed our hearts, Brazil and the Deaf. These past few months have been busy and very helpful to our future ministry. We have been traveling on the East coast and have been able to see some great ministries and establish contacts that will last for many years to come. While in Tennessee, we were able to visit the Bill Rice Ranch. This is a camp that has been ministering to the Deaf for many, many years. At the same time we were able to visit Silent Word Ministries and had the privilege of meeting Dr. Ted Camp. He was very instrumental in my learning of Sign Language. He allowed me to be a part of assembling a Brazilian Sign Language book. He gave me liberty to go through their building and library and to take whatever material I needed or felt I could use. That was such blessing to me.
I believe the greatest blessing was contacting Bro. David Bennett. He is now the International Missions Director for Silent Word, but was a missionary in Brazil to the Deaf for over 20 years. He established the Deaf church we will be working in when we begin to learn Portuguese Sign Language. The advice he gave to me was worth so much as he has already done what I will be looking to do while we serve in Brazil and seek to win the Deaf to Christ.
Yet at the same time deputation has been rough. A missionary friend of ours who has been in Mexico City for many years told me, “I do not envy you, now is a rough time for one to be raising support.” Interesting enough another man who was a missionary in Brazil for many years said, “It’s not the condition of the economy, but the spiritual condition of the church.” I know that the economy has affected everyone in some way, yet is not that the reason the Lord told us to live by faith? 2 Corinthians 5:7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:). I know that this does not apply to all churches but it sure does apply to many as I call and they are not able to support any more missionaries because the people are not giving. We still have the same and in some cases more missionaries that are wanting and willing to go where God has called them to go, yet are unable to do so or it is taking them a lot longer to do.
We praise God for your support, and for all that you have done for us. Please continue to pray for our nation, president, economy, churches and for us as we travel, serve and raise our support to get to where God has called us. Brazil !
Your friends, servants and missionaries for Him,
Edward, Paula, Eddie & Breanna Torres
